Post Workout Skin Care Routine

Looking to get in shape but also keep your skin blemish free? Follow our post-workout skin care routine for a quick and easy way to maintain your healthy looking skin.

This holidays seasons, most of us feel determined to hit the gym and get ready for the New Year. But our physical shape is not the only thing we should be worried about, we need to think about our skin. Even though breaking a sweat after an intense gym session feels gratifying, that same perspiration can cause your skin to flare up with bumps. If you want to avoid extra breakouts in your skin, you should consider the following advice.

Before The Gym

First thing is first, avoid at all cost going to the gym with makeup. Honestly, why would you do that to your pores? Your skin needs to breath, and clogging your pores with makeup will only add more bacteria and residue that can ferment in your pores causing acne.

It doesn't matter who you are, or what skin type you have, I recommend going to the gym with a clean face. You can prep your face with a soft cleanser that can eliminate residue but still keep your skin hydrated. Be mindful of what type of soap you are using, since regular hand soap can cause the skin to dry up and lose its natural oils.

I have learned that sometimes my oiliness in my face is caused by my skin being too dry. How can this be? Well since my skin is dehydrated, it produces more oil to overcompensate for the lack of moisture. This is why I have opted to use Missha Super Seed Green Tea Foaming Cleanser because it helps me fight skin inflammation while helping my skin keep its natural hydration levels. I love how gentle it is, but how incredible effective it is removing dirt and makeup. The best part is that it leaves a fresh feeling as well as supple skin.

After The Gym

After your workout, you need to immediately wash your face. Any time you sweat from physical activities, it is strongly recommended to cleanse the skin afterwards to help prevent acne as well as to help to cool you down. If you do not have running water in your gym, take with you face cleansing towels that can be used to wipe off extra residue until you get to your home.

If you don’t know what to use as a cleanser, look for ingredients that can kill acne causing bacteria like tea tree oil, or look for milk based products that can help you calm your skin. It is important to remember to preserve your skin elasticity, so try avoiding hot water when washing your face. Instead use cool water that can help you close your pores as well as to avoid that dry stretchy feeling in your skin.

Be gentle and pat dry your skin, to prevent further irritation. If you can let it air dry, even better! The towel looks harmless but it can carry acne causing bacteria into your face. While exercising, dab your towel to pick up the sweat instead of rubbing. This can cause to exfoliate skin and drag dirt into your pores. Always take with you a clean towel to the gym to prevent transferring bacteria.

Return the hydration to your skin with a facial mist. Or simply, take your toner and pat down a few droplets on your skin for that extra boost of hydration. The trick here is to avoid products with too much alcohol or perfume in them. Needless to say, these ingredients tends to dry up the skin and even give you more bumps and flares in your skin. My recent go to option is Missha Moist Lab Toner that has no sulfates, parabens, gluten or alcohol and is super gentle on the skin. Sensitive skin types should use these types of toners to avoid skin irritation. Toners are also good for removing extra residue left behind by the facial cleanser.

After cleansing and toning you can apply different treatments to your skin if you have any problem areas. I personally recommend to wait until all redness dissipates to apply more products. Lastly, finish your routine applying your favorite moisturizer and sunscreen. I personally use Missha Super Aqua Serum which is water based for a lightweight non comedogenic option. Finally, you can wear your makeup. Leave your workout with high confidence and radiant!

At Home

Before going to bed, adapt your skin care routine to replenish moisture. While sleeping, your skin is more likely to absorb better your skin care products, so use this time to add to your routine creams and ointments that treat bigger problems like wrinkles. You can also use overnight sleeping mask that can be washed in the morning for supple glowing skin.

Keep drinking water, even though you’re done with your workout. Losing all that sweat means that skin is also thirsty like you. Having a balanced diet will not only help you with your fitness goals, but also help you maintain a healthier skin. Eat your water as well by consuming more fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

Looking your best is all about dedication and hard work, but taking care of your skin is a piece of cake! Remember to always cleanse, tone, treat, moisturize and protect you skin for a flawless look.
